Oppède-le-Vieux: the village next door
What sets this village apart from the Luberon's other hilltop villages is its history. Residents gradually left it from the 19th century onward, moving down to the plain, until an unexpected second life began in 1940, when a community of refugee artists, architects and intellectuals, gathered around Consuelo de Saint-Exupéry and the architect Bernard Zehrfuss, settled there to restore it, later documenting the project in a book published in 1945.

the Church of Notre-Dame-d'Alydon, blending Romanesque and Gothic styles, beneath the ruins of the castle above it;
cobbled lanes and old houses, some dating to the Middle Ages or the Renaissance;
